FitHAUS Featured Athlete Maddy Frecon
We are so excited to featured FitHAUS athlete Maddy Frecon this month! Maddy, we’ve actually had our eye on you for a while, and have had several coaches mention your name! We’ve noticed your incredible work ethic at the gym from the get go...you are simply determined to be the best version of yourself and it shows. If you read below, you’ll see that Maddy had been solely doing barre workouts for over 12 years. When Maddy walked through our doors for a barre class, she said that she eventually wanted to get into lifting heavier weights. That day Maddy walked across the threshold from the barre studio to the gym side. By the next week she was in a Strength and Conditioning and before we knew it she came to a CrossFit class. We still get to see Maddy in barre, but she’s now got a new repertoire of fitness experience. Maddy, it’s been such a pleasure getting to know you and see you gain confidence in the gym over the past year. You are such a great addition to the FitHAUS community! Please read below to learn more about Maddy…the only thing she forgot to leave off her bio is her new “muscle mommy” status!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself…
I have my dream job, running my own Interior Design firm @maddyfreconinteriors and also juggling being a mom to three wildlings, Poppy (6), Alice (4) and Benoit (1-1/2). I have always been active and enjoy being outside whether it’s golfing, hiking, boating or gardening. Sometimes I wish I had more down time to read more books or needlepoint. My husband, Laurent, and I are total foodies and love to travel when we get the time, ideally somewhere we can hike and explore a local food scene.
2. What made you decide to join FitHAUS? What were you doing prior to coming to FH
Prior to Fithaus, I took Barre classes religiously for 12+ years but stopped after having my third child. When I was 9 months postpartum, I craved to get back into a studio but knew I wanted and needed something more than only Barre. I have never been one to push myself physically or athletically, and I tend to stay in my comfort zone so I tried to think of the most intimidating, bad ass, physically challenging exercise I could think of and it was Crossfit.
I did babysteps to get there though. I knew Nicole from the previous Barre studio I had attended, which also used to share a space with FitHaus, so I started taking Barre classes at FH. The following week I took my first S&C class with Julie and loved the physical and mental challenge. A few months later I told Nicole that my upcoming New Years Resolution was to do a Crossfit class. Soon after confiding in her, she somehow tricked/persuaded me into doing a Crossfit class well before New Years. I have been drinking the kool-aid ever since.
2. What is your favorite thing about FitHAUS?
I love it all! The people, the coaches, the community. I look forward to walking into the gym and always leave with a (sweaty) smile on my face. Since I am self-employed and spend a lot of time working on my own, I enjoy the time to interact with other adults sans kids. I love how every coach pushes you in an encouraging way (or tricks you) and everyone is your biggest supporter. You know the quote “Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you”? That is everyone at Fithaus.
3. What are some of the accomplishments related to physical fitness that you are most proud of. Do you have any fitness goals moving forward?
My biggest accomplishment is that I walked through the door and just started doing it. I think that’s the hardest part. I feel I am the strongest I have ever been and it’s such a sense of pride when you start lifting heavier weights. I am proud that I am getting closer to a non-assisted pull up and am down to one small band (haha) to help. Obviously the elusive pull up is my main goal.
4. How has being physically active bettered your life outside of the gym?
I have more confidence, more energy and am all around much happier. This makes all the difference in the world not just for me, but also for my family.
5. What is your favorite class or movement/skill? What is your least favorite movement?
I love upper body focused strength such as push press, bench press, etc. I am terrified of box jumps and if there is an excessive amount of assault bike in the workout, there’s a good chance I’m not going to class.
7. What advice would you give to someone looking to join FITHAUS?
Everyone says this but it’s true- JUST GO! Walking through the door is the hardest part and what do you have to lose? I finally said “screw it” after being terrified but I knew I wanted something to challenge me and kick my butt. I was intimidated by what others would think because I didn’t know what I was doing but nobody cares. Everyone is focused on their own form and workout and could care less about what you’re doing.
